As an Interior Stylist one of the questions I get asked the most is “how can I get into interiors?” and “what course should I do?”. It’s a crazy, colourful and fun world and it’s often hard to know exactly where to start… Well, good news! I have chatted to my friends in the industry and have the low down for you on 2 of the best courses in the biz.
The two design schools I have covered below are both based in Melbourne, however you need not even leave the comfort of your living room as both of these amazing schools offer their courses by correspondence, especially great for those of us thinking of a career change! Here’s an overview on what these fabulous schools offer;
1. Mercer School of Interior Design;
Based in the lively Collingwood neighbourhood, Mercer’s Melbourne campus is a hub of inspiration and collaboration, and is solely focused on Interior design, decoration and professional styling. No detail had been overlooked, from the up-to- date materials library, the student lounge, and a state of the art computer labs, set in the natural light filled New York styled studio space, it’s the perfect inspiring learning environment.
The fabulous Mercer teachers are industry professionals themselves and share their vast and diverse knowledge and experience in everything from commercial design to property styling, ensuring that students are surrounded by people who are in the know. Mercer’s exclusive collaboration with The Stylesmiths also means that students have the opportunity to experience working on real design jobs before graduating.
And if you needed any more inspo to get going, they run a student trip to New York and Los Angeles curated by Mercer’s director Diane Bergeron which introduces students to internationally-acclaimed designers and tour their private offices and showrooms. Highlights from their last trip were meeting Kelly Wearstler, Nathan Turner, Ashe & Leandro just to name a few!
2. The Design School
At Design School, there is an innate belief that a hands on and practical approach to learning is best. Students experience real projects, real experiences, real stories and real industry knowledge. The courses offer a study-work-life balance by providing flexible hours and face-to-face training. Featuring a creative warehouse studio in Melbourne’s Abbotsford, real life styling stations, and small class sizes (currently teaching 3 classes of around 60 students in total) ensures students get one on one attention and are on their individual pathway to success.
The Design School was founded by Jenna Densten (a former contestant on Channel 9s The Block with husband and Bicker Design business partner Josh). Following huge success on The Block, and carving out a name for themselves as an authority on interior style, they started their own Interior Design business Bicker Design where they have worked on an impressive client list of both residential and retail projects.
Jenna has now partnered up with MP Personnel to bring her accredited design course to Melbourne and her home town of Wodonga. The course includes all aspects of professional interior decoration from styling and visual merchandising to photography. “I wanted to put the course together based on what I felt I needed in the industry and open up career paths in both interior decoration and visual merchandising. It’s the course I wish had been available to me at the time I studied. So much of what I learnt came from industry experience and we felt that practical experience was what was missing in design education. Why just learn about colour in theory, when we can also paint the walls to see the impact for ourselves!” says Jenna.
