Glamping on Wheels in Aus

Glamping, AKA camping with a dash of luxury, has fast become ‘the done thing’ in the travel world but kicking back in a tent for a few nights remains an ambitious thought for many of us. Where there’s a will there’s a way and after gushing over a Californian Airstream in our last article here, we were inspired to bring you our edit of vintage caravans and airstreams in Aus so you can the most of our country’s outstanding bush-bashing territory. Thankfully, there’s no shortage of uber cute vintage digs on wheels and just as well – because if you’re going to rough it, you may as well do it in something pretty.

Wanderlings, Mornington Peninsula

You’d be forgiven if you thought the stars of Wanderlings – Peggy Sue (an 1966 Airstream) and Miss Myrtle (a vintage caravan) – were a couple of wholesome American girls. They are just as sweet as their names suggest and even include boardgames, mags and books. Booking is super simply you pick your location and the per night price includes delivery, set up and pack down (no tow ball needed).

Price: $550 for 2 nights (Sunday is free if you stay Friday and Saturday). Check out Peggy Sue and Miss Myrtle here. Cover image of Peggy Sue @emmakateco

Notel Melbourne

Glamping on wheels doesn’t necessarily mean hitting the wilderness. In fact, you can get whiff of Into The Wild in central Melbourne thanks to a collection of six airstreams, which are sitting pretty on the rooftop of a multi-storey carpark overlooking Flinders Lane. The ‘hotel that’s not actually a hotel’ opened in August 2016 and boasts several points of difference including a virtual concierge plus a complimentary minibar and iPad pro (with netflix of course) in each airstream – not to mention the ‘with benefits’ version with a spa. So how the heck did the airstreams get up there? They were craned, of course. If you’re after a simplistic luxury that’s a step up from a standard caravan then Notel Melbourne’s your ticket.

Price: from $395 per night (With Benefits Airstream is from $440. Check out Notel Melbourne herePhotographs Andrew Curtis.

Retro Pod Camping, Byron Bay

A simple ad on a shopping centre notice board was what spurred The Pod’s owner, Helen Luna, to fall in love with the 1964 Sunnier Caravan. The caravans can be rented in the Byron Bay area and delivery, set up and pack down is included.  You can also hire the BBQ or bikes, or even book a hamper with plenty of Byron Bay’s finest wares.
