WOW WEE! It’s been 3 weeks since our wedding and I’d do anything to relive the whole experience again –hands down the best day of our lives. It was everything we had hoped for plus so much more.
Mat and I had spent the last 6 years travelling from Perth to Melbourne to attend the Spring Racing Carnival so when he proposed on Melbourne Cup morning last year we thought it would be the perfect opportunity to get our family and friends to Melbourne and roll our wedding celebrations into the races this year. We also have lots of family in New Zealand, so Melbourne was only half the distance for them to travel. We contemplated having a Friday wedding and then heading straight to Derby Day on the Saturday but the more we thought about it, we wanted our wedding to be ONE BIG PARTY and knowing how much our friends and family like to party we agreed it would be best to have a ‘rest day’ to nurse our hangovers.
We decided to marry on a Thursday afternoon on The Deck at Circa. Not only is The Deck a beautiful contemporary event space, with a huge timber terrace overlooking Port Phillip Bay, it’s also conveniently connected to The Prince Hotel so it was ideal for wedding guests who didn’t want to go far after the wedding. They could literally stumble a few steps back to their rooms.
I spent the morning of the wedding chilling and getting ready with Mum and Bec. Dad joined us later in the day. We didn’t have big bridal parties as it was just too hard choosing. Instead, I had my closest girlfriends join me for champagne and nibbles in the afternoon prior to the ceremony. The girls arrived all dressed and ready so we were able to get some professional shots of us all together. The girls also got to witness me getting into my wedding dress before they were driven back to The Prince.
To allow for the peak hour traffic in Melbourne we asked guests to arrive at 5:00pm knowing that there would be some latecomers. We served beer and champagne at the custom installed circular bar under The Deck marquee while everyone mingled until I arrived at 5:30pm. The ‘party’ kicked off as soon as the ceremony concluded. Cocktails and canapés were served while we made the most of the beautiful afternoon weather and walked across to the beach for a few quick photos.
On our arrival back to Circa the grazing table commenced and was replenished throughout the night. It was stocked full of oysters, prawn cocktails, sushi and sashimi. For dinner we served roaming bowls of slow cooked lamb shoulder, beer braised beef, organic zucchini risotto and ocean trout.
I’m the biggest chocolate fiend EVER (and I have slowly twisted Mat’s arm too) so it would not have been our wedding if we didn’t incorporate that milky chocolate goodness in some way. At 10pm (with the DJ playing Charlie & The Chocolate Factories Oompa Loompa) we opened the chocolate bar where guests could fill up boxes of my favourite chocolate treats to take home or scoff on the spot. Just in case the sugar high wasn’t enough to keep everyone on the dance floor, we served espresso martinis to up the ante and mini burgers, croque monsieur’s and fish and chips for supper.
When midnight struck we were all having so much fun that the drinks and bad dance moves continued downstairs at The Acland St Cantina until 3am. Having a Thursday wedding was one of the best decisions we made. Going off the hangover reports there is no way any of our guests would have been able to back it up with a day at the races afterwards.
I loved everything about our special day. Nothing can beat having your closest family and friends in the same place at the same time. To top it off with a beautiful setting, great food and drinks, the best tunes, amazing weather and the love of your life, it really was a dream come true.
Our wonderful suppliers who I cannot recommend enough:
Event Design + Styling: The Style Co www.thestyleco.com.au
These ladies are honestly the best in the business. I would have spent over 200 hours researching all things weddings and gathering ideas. When we sat down with The Style Co girls for our first meeting we were so impressed and knew they could deliver what we wanted. I remember walking into Circa on the day and my jaw hit the floor. They executed the design better than we could have ever imagined. Every aspect from custom installations, flowers, lighting, furniture and signage was impeccable. I was so busy admiring the details when I arrived that I nearly missed my cue to walk down the aisle. Luckily Chloe (the world’s best event planner) was there to quickly usher me into position.
Flowers: The Style Co www.thestyleco.com.au
Furniture: Dan Event Hire www.danneventhire.com.au
These guys aren’t your typical event furniture hire company. Their stuff is contemporary, innovative and on trend. I want absolutely everything we hired for the wedding in my new house so I have been stalking their other website www.spacetocreate.co where these amazing pieces are for available to purchase. Eeeeeek!
Ceremony + Reception: The Deck at Circa www.theprincedeck.com.au
Event Planner: Chloe from The Style Co www.thestyleco.com.au
I’m extremely organised…a tad OCD to be honest, so to have Chloe who is ‘next level’ organised when it comes to wedding planning was a godsend. It was so reassuring having someone on the same page during the planning process. She was on top of everything and absolutely nailed it on the day.
Photography: Erin + Tara www.erinandtara.com.au
These girls are truly talented. Check out all of these pics – enough said!
Videography: Humdrum Films www.humdrumfilms.com.au
Jared and Jacob from Humdrum are two top blokes who captured our day just perfectly.
Entertainment: Top Dog Entertainment www.topdogentertainment.com.au
We kicked off the live music with Anton on Saxophone during canapé/cocktail hour and then DJ Claire Elliot looked after the dance floor with the help of Hayley on vocals, followed by Aaron on Percussion/Bongos to really amp things up later in the evening.
Bride & Bridesmaid Gowns: J’Aton Couture www.jatoncouture.com
J’Aton Couture! Say no more. I cannot put into words how talented Anthony and Jacob are. These gorgeous boys are so ahead of the game it’s insane. How they continually create these jaw dropping masterpieces is beyond me. My incredible gown was fully hand embroidered and every single silk thread had been strategically applied by hand. It truly was a work of art and I wish I could renew my vowels already just so I can wear my dress again.
Shoes: Nicholas Kirkwood from www.mytheresa.com
Grooms Suit: P Johnson Tailors www.pjohnson.com.au
